Software: Worldmate travel buddy

In a nutshell...

An all-in-one travel tool with weather forecasts, currency converter and more (for a price). Pack it on your Nokia to keep on top of things while wandering a strange country.

Judgement time!

Worldmate brings travel information to your fingertips. It’s available in two levels - you’ll get world clocks, a currency converter, a world map, weather forecasts and a ‘weather caster’ for free. Pay cold hard cash for the app and you’ll get satellite images and flight information too!

It’s a handy app to have in your pocket, especially for free. The currency converter and world clocks are particularly neat, although the weather forecaster (which attempts to speak the weather to you) feels like it’s included for novelty value.

As you’re setting up the software for the first time it gives the option to add Worldmate to your shortcut bar, which is a nice touch, but it doesn’t integrate any further with your phone’s built in features.

Overall Worldmate’s a sturdy creation, and has some generally handy features. Don’t be tempted to upgrade to the ‘Pro’ verion though, it’s not worth £27 for flight data and satellite imagery - you can get both of those for free using your phone’s web browser, or with Google Maps.

Go ahead, install it, if only for the currency converter and world clocks, but don’t be fooled by the gold stars and promises of more.
