Big screen, fast connection, now all you need is a tasty browser to enjoy it all on. Fear not our trusty comrades, for we have a simple four step process to have you browsing in luxury. And yes, it’s after the jump.
What’s the point?
Your Nokia already has a web browser, but Opera’s offering is fast, efficient and astoundingly good at showing full-size sites on your tiny screen. Try it, you’ll like it!
Is it free?
Yep. You’ll only pay your usual data charge.
Sold! How do I do it?
Step 1: Sit yourself down in front of a computer and head over to Opera’s download site - tap in your country and phone number and you’ll receive a text message with a link. Hit the link and choose ‘Download Opera Mini’ on the page that’s displayed. Opera will start flowing down your pipe as it were, and you’ll be given the option to install it either on your phone or to a memory card.
Step 2: Once Opera is installed you can launch it from within your ‘Applications’ (Nseries) or ‘Installations’ (Eseries) folder. You’ll see it asks for ‘random data’ to help secure your browsing. Mash the keypad until the progress bar is full –this random string of numbers helps encrypt your browsing so you can’t be snooped upon.
Step 3: Next Opera will test your phone’s connections to choose the best way of getting online. It’ll take a minute but you’ll soon be presented with instructions for using the browser. Take a minute to read them, but it’s pretty simple really. Up and down scroll between links on a page, or at a line at a time if there are none, while left and right act as page up and down. Hit the centre button to follow a link. Easy.
Step 4: The first time you follow a link, Opera will ask you to agree to its usage terms. Tick the box to say you agree, hit continue and you’re away.
Play around with Opera for a while, and you’ll see how fast it is. Part of its secret is converting pages into one column. It means there’s no fussing with left and right scrolling, so everything’s much clearer on your phone’s titchy screen. Its start page is also dead clever, with a box for web addresses, a search box and Wikipedia search– everything you need for quick reference on the move.
