Internet radio for your Nokia. Listen to stations around the world, for when FM radio’s just too crackly and dull.
Judgement time!
Spodtronic takes an age to install, but stick with it and you’ll be rewarded with an extremely well designed app that makes internet radio simple to use and a real alternative to FM on the move.
A radio directory means you’ll always find something new to listen to, and you can narrow down the choice with filters by genre or country.
There’s something for everyone, from classic hits to high-energy dance. Unfortunately, you can’t tap in the addresses of custom stations, so if your favourite’s missing, you’ll have to go without.
That said, sound quality is superb, and Spodtronic are clearly selective about which stations they feature. Each stream is buffered before playing, so the radio’s judder-free and crystal clear.
Most stations display the name of the track playing on-screen, and some will throw up graphics too. A select few stations even let you send feedback on songs, so you can register your disgust as soon as the playlist takes a turn for the worse.
As well as internet radio, Spodtronic crams in a podcast player, although like the radio there’s no option to download custom shows so you’re stuck with their directory choices. Still, playback’s good, even if it’ll only update which shows are available automatically, not download them. Unlike Nokia’s own podcast app, this one remembers where you got to if you stop listening halfway through.
Amazingly for such a genuinely useful app, Spodtronic is completely free. You’ll have to put up with some adverts, but it’s worth it for the wealth of radio on offer. Install it, you’ll love it.
