A password-protected hidey-hole for all the sensitive stuff kept on your mobile. Fancy yourself as a bit of a Bond sort? Well, this is app is killer at keeping secret notes, images, videos and sounds way from prying eyes. That includes you Scaramanga!
Judgement time...
Everyone has something embarrassing on their phone, whether it’s a naughty picture or video, or just some MP3s you’re ashamed to own and listen to. The trouble with keeping them on your phone is that they’re not secure - anyone could find them and unearth your filthy little secrets, unless you install Media Safe 2.
It’s a handy little app that holds more or less anything you can throw at it, safely securing files behind a password. What’s more, it doesn’t just slip your secret stuff into a hidden directory, it actually encrypts the contents - that means they’re secure even if someone nicks your memory card and uses a PC to crack it open.
Separated from the main media library of your phone, anything you want protected has to be manually imported into Media Safe. This is perhaps its only weakness. Forgetful types are unlikely to religiously save sensitive files into the safe, leaving themselves as vulnerable as if it were never there. It’d be better if a prompt flashed up each time a new picture was taken (a la ShoZu) asking if it should be kept secret or not.
The one area Media Safe does allow direct file creation inside its secure boundaries is within the notes section, although the text editor built in doesn’t support predictive text and only uses one line, so it’s clunky and difficult to use.
What’s more, if you install the app to your phone’s memory rather than the memory card, all encrypted files will be stored on the handset too, filling up the available space incredibly quickly.
Aside minor oversights, however, this is a solid bit of software. It’s not as cheap as it could be, but the free version will provide you with the same security at the cost of a few nagging ‘please register’ messages. If you can overlook those, this is a winner.
