How to: Save money with your mobile

Most people use their phones to make calls. Some send texts whilst others dabble in a bit of music, photography and even accessing Internets. Us, we’re tight-fisted buggers so when we found out we could use our blowers to save us some wedge, we were over the bloody moon. Properly excited. And so should you be. Don’t forget to buy us a pint with pennies you save…

What’s the point?

Make your mobile work for you, cutting costs, making money and turning into a right little cash magnet.

Is it free?

Except for Handy Expense and MobFinance, yes.

Sold! How do I do it?

Step 1 Using VoIP is the quickest way to save money using your mobile. Install Fring on your phone and you’ll be able to use Skype on the go. Spread the word to your mates and you’ll be able to call each other absolutely free! What’s more, you’ll get IM access gratis too, so the pennies saved on texts will really mount up.

Step 2 Track your bills using your mobile. It’s dead simple, using a program like Handy Expense. Keep on top of your outgoings and maintain a record of what you can claim back. It’ll mean you’re never left out of pocket after a trip, and always have a record of what you’ve spent.

Step 3 Check prices on the go. Amazon’s mobile app is available from the ‘download’ section on your Nokia. It’s not really an app though, more of a shortcut to a special mobile store using your phone’s browser. Still, it lets you check prices in a jiffy when you’re out shopping, so you can check if that bargain purchase isn’t available cheaper online.

Step 4 Calculate tips exactly. You don’t have to be stingy with tips to save money. Use a tip calculator on your phone to make sure you pay a fair amount, rather than just rounding it up sloppily. Apps like GeoTip mean you’ll always keep staff happy, while not short changing yourself with shonky maths.

Step 5 SELL SELL SELL! Keep an eye on your stocks and shares, even while away from your computer. Install MobFinance and you’ll see your portfolio updated at the push of a button, so you’ll always know the best time to phone your broker!
