In a nutshell…
A racing game with a storyline? And getting-out-of-the-car-and-shooting bits? Sounds like GTA, but without the fancy graphics.
Judgement time…
Driver does what few racing games do on mobiles – it gives you something more than flat tracks to speed round. The designers have crafted the game around a ‘storyline’ and although the plot’s weak, it means that each race has a different purpose.
You might be chasing down a rival gang member, losing a police tail, or racing to rescue a hostage. There’s even the chance to lean out of the windows and shoot opponents off the road, so races are varied and interesting.
To unlock different styles of race, you need to follow the storyline, which is a bit of a drag if you’re just after a quick hit of fun. However, once you’ve unlocked a race type it’s quickly accessible from the extras menu, along with the cars you’ve accumulated and tracks you’ve visited.
The end result is a quality race-come-adventure game, and although it’s ridiculously easy, it’s actually quite fun, even if the blocky 3D graphics look dated.
Bizarrely, the best element of Driver isn’t actually driving, it’s the parts of the game where you’re allowed out of the car to shoot at bad guys.
Cities are large, and although they’re mainly flat, there’re obstacles in the road which let you perform stunts and cheeky driving manoeuvres.
Overall Driver’s a good game, it’s not the most visually impressive, and the storyline whiffs a bit, but for a dose of driving fun with a difference, it’s tops.
