After shelling out over £8billion (yes, really) on global mapping giant Navteq, Nokia has some grand schemes in mind for your mobile’s photo and video apps. The boys from Helsinki are planning on using Navteq’s mapping data in a whole host of Internet-based services, including, according to one spokesman, “search and navigation, photos and videos, as well as presence and communities.” Swisho!
So what does that all mean? Well, while it’s too early to say for certain, we’ll go all Nostradamus and say we reckon that on the search and navigation side of things, you’ll get better detail in and quicker updates to Nokia Maps, more points of interest and just more info all round.
Photos and videos are almost certain to get geotagging, which means you’ll know exactly where you snapped that shot or captured that movie, thanks to your device’s GPS receiver stamping each file with the current coordinates. You’ll then be able to hop into Nokia Maps and the location will be flagged, perhaps even with a thumbnail of each photo.
On the community side of things, Nokia has already shown its hand - or a bit of it, at least. You’ll be able to - and this is brilliant - look on a map and see, in real time, where your Nokia-toting friends and family members are at that precise moment. You’ll also be able to create your own tags and points of interest for maps.
We’re sure Nokia has some even cooler things in mind for all its newly-acquired mapping data, and we’ll give you a shout when any more info emerges.
