Why create your own Widgets, when you can just work out a way to make someone else’s work on your device. That’s what Forum Nokia has done with its new Web Run Time, coming to a Nok near you soon.
New documents just revealed show how application developers can port existing Apple Dashboard widgets to the new Nokia Web Run Time, due to appear in the next version of the S60 operating system. We could be seeing full on widgets on our Noks as early as January.
The documents also give developers tips on creating Widgets from scratch, but the real boon has to be porting existing Apple Dashboard widgets. There are thousands already available and the porting process although manual, is fairly straightforward.
Even better though is seeing a whole load of new web-based applications appearing on our Noks. Because the apps use HTML, CSS and Javascript, they’re fairly easy to build. Like Apple’s Dashboard Widgets, we could see thousands of funky new mobile apps appearing overnight.
Both Nokia Widgets and Apple Dashboard Widgets are built on the same WebKit open srouce browser engine, making porting a relatively simple process with a simple step-by-step guide taking developers through what needs to happen.
No word yet on the first devices to use the next version of the OS, but we reckon it’ll pop up in the next couple of months, with the N95 and N81 perfect candidates for this new lot of funkyness.
