We’re in Oulu for Nokia’s “The way we live next” event and a Nokia rep has just revealed the company could be developing intelligent widgets for our blowers. Talking about the next generation of Web applications, Ganesh Sivaraman, Nokia’s man on web apps, paints a very exciting picture of what we can expect next.
Unlike regular widgets, the next generation will actually be able to read and understand different aspects of your device, and react accordingly. If you have a flight scheduled in your calendar, for example, there could be a widget that’ll be able to read the calendar and spot the flight before contacting the airline or airport to check the flight is on time. Beyond that, the widget might even be able to check in for you as well.
Making these widgets work isn’t going to be an easy task though. First up they need to be ‘context-aware’, so they know where you, and your phone are, at any point in time, even if you’re indoors (and not looking at a satellite). Nokia’s already developing an application to help you work out where you are inside, and its also in the process of buying mapping giant Navteq. With these things in place, making a phone that knows exactly where it is, and has the ability to work out what it’s owner is doing, doesn’t seem to be that far-fetched.
There’s no doubting the power of widgets. Already we’ve seen some clever little apps pop up and now that it’s easy to port widgets from Apple’s dashboard, the range of widgets will increase massively. These next gen ones sound the business though. We’ve no idea how long it’ll take to get them, but we reckon we could be in for a few surprises in the next few months.
