In a nutshell...

Can’t remember where you took that once-in-a-lifetime picture? Maybe you just want to show off and plot your pictures on a map. Psiloc Photo Tagger can help, GPS tagging all your snaps with exact location data.

Judgement time...

Location tagging is becoming more popular, as more phones now come packing GPS technology and quality cameras. It’s still a tricky task to pull off though. Most phones struggle to grab a quick lock on satellites, meaning by the time you’ve snapped your shot the phone’s only just powered up its GPS circuits.

It’s that hardware limitation that makes Psiloc Photo Tagger a dubious piece of software. While it’s great in principal, the idea just doesn’t translate to reality.

What initially seem neat features, like only powering up GPS when the camera’s in use, presumably to save battery power, actually translate to poor design choices, as GPS is ineffective if switched on for less than a few minutes.

There’s also no upload tool built in, so you’ll need some extra software to fling tagged photos direct from your handset to Flickr or any other service that supports tagging.

Still, if you’ve got enough patience, and your battery holds out, Photo Tagger does its job, and reasonably well. GPS data is stored in the correct place within image files, so web services will have no trouble interpreting them, just don’t expect it to work everywhere or every time.
