Game: Vegas Pool Sharks

In a nutshell…

Slick pool for your mobile, but with a few annoying quirks. It’s still as you’d expect it, in full 3D, with easy aiming and rewarding results, but with the odd infuriating extra thrown in for free.

Judgement time…

Don’t fool yourself. Vegas Pool Sharks is the same as most other pool games. There’s very little to make this title Vegas-themed. The only gambling associated is with poorly executed AI avatars, and winning carries few real rewards.

It’s slightly disappointing, but thanks to the game’s excellent 3D graphics there’s still plenty to keep your interest.

Shots are easy to line up, even on small mobile screens, and it’s possible to give the various AI competitors a good thrashing. Great compensation for their existence in the first place.

Unfortunately what could have been a simple, but brilliant, pool game is marred by a few annoying ‘extras’. The cartoon opponents at the bottom of the screen make the game feel childish and slightly tacky, although to be fair, you can remove them with some extra fiddling.

The game also blasts you with ‘title music’ at full volume the first time you fire it up. That’ll cause instant embarrassment if you happen to try it in public.

Overall though it’s a decent enough simulation. Sure, there’re no extras like the trick-shots or challenges we’d expect in a ‘glamourous’ Vegas-themed title. But it’s cheap, and generally well made. If it’s hot ball and pocket action you’re after, you could do far worse.
