In a move that’ll surely have Steve Jobs choking on his muesli, the Nok has played a blinder with its new “Comes with Music” service.
Launching soon with a range of devices Comes with Music is as exactly as it sounds: buy a phone and get a year’s worth of music thrown in. Free. Gratis. For nowt. You can download and chew as much music as you want for a whole year and at the end of it, you get to keep the lot. Yep, the lot.
No news on DRM and the like just yet, and the offer is only available for bands signed to Universal Music right now (so it’s a limited service). That said, U2 (our favourite), Eminem, Mika and Andrea Boccelli (us neither) are some of the more notable acts alongside plenty of back catalogue from the likes of the Rolling Stones.
This is definitely a brave, and adventurous, new move from the Nok. Where we’ve been previously a bit, shall we say, lacking enthusiasm for the Nokia Music Store, we’re suddenly getting very excited. This is the kind of brave new world that should help the Nok unseat Apple. Rock on.
