In a nutshell…

A new version of Nokia’s sports software, letting you upload workouts and race people online.

Judgement time…

We thought Nokia’s Sports Tracker was a slice of pure Finnish genius when it first landed on our mobiles. If you remember, we called it “wickedly clever and astoundingly simple”.

This new version is still both of those things, bringing everything from the old version bang up to date with online interactivity.

Those aren’t just buzzwords we’re bandying around either – we really mean it. This version of sports tracker will upload your exercises to other users, so they can race against you over the same terrain. You can use the system to challenge friends online, try to beat their time, or just discover great new routes near you.

As before, there’s the option to go walking, running, cycling or skiing, as well as two custom exercises. Hopping, maybe, or swimming (with your Nok in a water-proof case.)

The new system integrates Sports Tracker with the web quickly and simply. Routes are plotted courtesy of Google Maps, images can be tagged to your paths, and the web-end of Nokia’s software is speedy, efficient and beautifully designed.

Think of this as Nike+iPod for your phone, and with extras you won’t find on Apple hardware.

In short, it’s the best sequel since Empire Strikes Back, and with smaller satnav phones like the N82 popping up, taking your phone on the road’s more appealing than ever.
