Nokia's not so bad shocker

The Nok has taken a bit of a hammering since announcing details of the Comes With Music Service the other day. “It’s not free” they cried, “It’s a ripoff” some wailed. Well now, finally, there’s a bit of balanced reporting and a view which has got us thinking.

MocoNews’s story kicks off on details of the Comes With Music service reporting (via Engadget) that tracks will be 192kbps and 128kbps (we’re not sure why there’ll be two types - maybe the smaller one for downloading on your phone?) and they’ll be WMA, which we kinda knew already.

The root of the story though was the mud-covered bit at the bottom where the comparison was drawn with Apple and Nokia’s reasoning was revealed. Apple launched the iPod and iTunes service as a gadget and music store where you bought the music and couldn’t play it anywhere else. Nokia is launching a gadget and music store service where you get the music for free and you can’t play it anywhere else. It’s a touch disturbing that nobody else has pointed this out before.

Now, can we all just forget about the DRM and think about how good this actually is. Thank you.
