What’s the point?

Your N95’s so smart it can tell you the best places to go, offer up their phone number for an advance booking, tell you how to get there, and even keep you out of trouble on the way.

Is it free?

Apart from voice directions for Nokia Maps, Wayfinder Speed Alert and optional city guides, yes!

Sold! How do I do it?

Step 1: Finding a destination is a piece of cake with an N95 in your hand. Tap into ‘Maps’ on the main menu, wait for it to lock on to your position, tap ‘Options’ and choose ‘Search’ then ‘By category’. Here you’ll find it easy to track down restaurants, tourist attractions and other destinations in your area. If you’re looking further afield, try searching for your destination by choosing ‘Search’ then ‘By address’ then repeating the steps above to find attractions nearby.

Step 2: Not sure of the area you’re visiting? Nokia’s Maps software can serve up city guides too. Just tap ‘Options’ then ‘Extra services’ to find them. They’ll cost extra, but if you’re visiting a strange city and need information fast then they’re dead handy.

Step 3: Once you’re on the move you’ll need audible directions to keep you legal, as well as headed in the right direction. Subscribe to the voice navigation for Nokia Maps and you’ll have no trouble finding the right route. The upgrade costs from £4.50 for a week, and is available through the ‘Extra services’ menu, just next to Nokia’s city guides.

Step 4: Got a need for speed? Stay out of trouble on the road with Wayfinder Speed Alert. It’ll keep track of your location and speed using GPS, and sound the alarm if you’re about to speed past a police check or safety camera. It’s a touch on the pricey side at £30, but if it keeps you in possession of your licence it’ll be worth every penny.

Step 5: Driving a car isn’t always the best way to reach your final destination, so for a spot of sightseeing install MetrO. It’s a free route-finder that’ll plot the best path across numerous cities using public transport. Just tell it which sights you’d like to see, and in which order, and it’ll work out the most efficient itinerary for you. It’s a huge time-saver, and means more time enjoying your destination, and less time gawping at maps.
