The world’s biggest gadget-fest is well under way in Las Vegas, and Nokia’s stand has a distinctive whiff of eco-friendliness about it.
Not only have the Finns laid on a phone recycling bin for CES attendees (because, y’know, we always get the urge to chuck our mobile away in the middle of a giant technology expo), but they’ve trotted out a couple of super-green handsets for the public – not to mention our lucky chums over at ElectricPig.tv – to prod and probe.
The Eco Sensor Concept is straight out of Star Trek, a true next-gen blower using printed electronics and constructed from biodegradable plastics and other reclaimed materials, all of which make it green to produce, plus fully recyclable. But it doesn’t stop there: the phone is accompanied by a sensor-toting wristwatch that analyses your surrounding environmental conditions and (here’s the slightly scary bit) monitors your health. The last thing we want when we’re in the pub is a voice coming from our coat pocket telling us that the beer we’re necking is making us fat, but we do like where Nokia’s going with this.
The Eco Sensor Concept is many years from becoming a reality, of course, but alongside it at CES is the Solar Eco phone, which Nokia reckons could be produced within a couple of years. This smartie gets its juice from a solar panel-encrusted carrycase, and has a sensor component that clips to your sleeve, making it able to monitor your heart rate as well as the weather and environmental conditions.
