Fuel cells to power mobiles soon(ish)

Offering crazy amounts of power and charging up in minutes, hydrogen fuel cell technology is going to kill off traditional lithium phone batteries one day. And that day could be sooner than we thought.

See, Canadian firm Angstrom Power has just been showing off a fuel cell-equipped Motorola mobile with twice the talk time of a regular lithium-toting blower. And it charges to full capacity in a mere ten minutes. And here’s the coolest bit – it’s a regular sized phone, with no attachments or bulky protrusions.

Angstrom also revealed that their tech has also been approved for in-flight use by the International Civil Aviation Organization, meaning you won’t have to worry about your phone exploding when you’re 30,000 feet above the Atlantic. Phew.

So with all this working nicely, there’s only a couple of things left to iron out. First, companies like Nokia will have to start producing fuel cell compatible gear. And second, the price of the tech has got to be affordable enough that it’s worthwhile for us to start ditching those dirty lithium numbers and switching to cells. Angstrom reckon they’ll have a potential market of a billion customers in 2010 – so clearly they think the price will be right by then. We can’t wait.
