Game: Lament Island

In a nutshell…

Epic 3D gaming that’s ambitious and beautifully made, but ultimately too slow to be considered fun.

Judgement time…

Lament Island is an ambitious game. 3D graphics are tricky to pull off well on mobiles, let alone when you’re attempting to string together an engaging adventure too.

Technically, it’s a tour de force, making use of video, 3D graphics and even employing the microphone at times.

Yes, there are some of the lengthiest load times we’ve ever seen at work here, and the control system, particularly while running, sometimes gets confusing. But Lament Island is to be applauded for its ambition and the skill with which it’s been put together.

That said, it’s difficult to recommend this as an entertaining game. The pace of progress is just too slow to provide real mobile enjoyment. If you enjoy being hunched over your mobile for hours, then maybe this is the game for you, but it won’t please the majority of Nokia owners.

There’s no instant gratification, no quick thrills and, in the early stages of the game, a lot of confused wandering, button jabbing and head-scratching.

Ambitious? Yes. Technically impressive? More than most titles we’ve seen. Fun? Absolutely not. If you’re an adventure addict you’ll love it. If you’re after a quick hit of mobile thumb-twiddling, look elsewhere.
