Software: DeviceScape

In a nutshell:

A Wi-Fi wizard to connect to hotspots without fiddly log-in pages.

What’s it good for?

Saving time fiddling with log-in pages and encryption codes whenever you use Wi-Fi.

Judgement time…

Nokia’s Wi-Fi phones pack the perfect partnership of high-speed wireless and a capable browser to facilitate logging in. It’s not a fool-proof package though, as many Wi-Fi spots will make you jump through hoops just to get connected.

Usernames, passwords, verification codes, and endless terms and conditions tickboxes can stand in the way of a successful connection. Unless you install DeviceScape. The premise is simple. Tell DeviceScape your access details, and it’ll handle the log-in process for you. And it works.

Setting up the app isn’t the simplest process in the world (although our tutorial here breaks it down step-by-step). You’re required to add the software to your Nokia, then set up an account online and feed it your Wi-Fi account details. Then you’ll need to update the app to suck down your details and install them.

We’d prefer to have seen it the other way around, with a website that checked all your details before delivering the app and associated settings direct to the handset in a single package, but it’s a minor gripe.

Overall, DeviceScape really is a timesaver. If you have an account with a hotspot firm like T-Mobile or The Cloud, or hop between any number of private Wi-Fi networks, it’s much less fiddly than tapping in passwords or encryption keys using the phone’s keypad. Best of all, it’s free!
