It seems that the Nok just can’t stop itself from splashing the cash – this week, the mighty Finns inked a deal that should see them acquire Norwegian software maker Trolltech for a cool $155m.
So what? Well, Trolltech specialises in embedded software that works across loads of platforms: Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, plus mobile phone operating systems. We reckon that Nokia wants to start rolling out apps that aren’t just for your S60 mobile, but also work faultlessly on your desktop computer, laptop and any other mobiles phones you have lying around the house.
In Nokia’s own words: “With Trolltech, Nokia and third party developers will be able to develop applications that work in the Internet, across Nokia’s device portfolio and on PCs.” Basically, this spending spree is all about laying the groundwork for Nokia’s answer to Google Android – a platform that spans mobile devices, the Internet and computers. Exciting stuff.
