Automatic geotagging for your photos.
What is it good for?
Showing what the future holds for location-based services.
Judgement time…
If you’ve been keeping an eye on Nokia’s recent announcements, you’ll know the big thing for this year is GPS and location-based services. Part of the bigger picture is geo-tagging your photos so you can sort and view by local and even navigate to these pics. Location Tagger is a fledgling start to this new experience.
This neat little app simply embeds co-ordinates into the photos JPEG file when you take a snap. But it’s worth noting that this app is just a taster of what’s to come and is pretty limited in scope until it’s integrated into Nokia’s location-based vision.
Nokia claims it works on most Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition handsets but you’ll need a GPS connection so handsets with built-in receivers like the N95, N95 8GB, N82 and E90 are more suitable.
Getting started is simple: we side-loaded the app via PC Suite’s Application Installer onto a Nokia N95 8GB and it took seconds to hit the handset.
You must always go through the app if you want your photos tagged and once it’s fired up, Location Tagger will prompt the GPS receiver and find your location. You then press the dedicated camera to power-up the camera and take your snap.
Find a strong GPS signal and photo tagging takes seconds. You can then view your snaps in the apps Logs tab and even show the image location in Nokia Maps. It’s all very straightforward.
But right now that’s all it can do and because the app is really just a beta appetizer, it shouldn’t be criticised too harshly. Once Nokia’s wider location experience is in place it will play an important part.
