John Bonham, Keith Moon, Charlie Watts, Ringo Starr, Dave Grohl – the greatest rock drummers of all time. Well, now another tub-thumper is joining this pantheon of legends, the good ol’ Nokia S60 phone.
Thanks to a genius new freeware app, called BeatEd, you can turn your S60 smartphone into a bona fide rock’n’roll drum machine (pictured). Developed by musician and Symbian-head Saku Tiainen so he could practice his guitar over a backing beat, it certainly beats (er, sorry) forking out the lolly for whiz-bang drum machine or hire a monosyllabic real life skin-hitter.
Just plug your blower into an amp via the headphone jack, choose one of the 16 different drum tracks and make some noise. There’s a 16 channel audio mixer to tinker with the patterns and tempos can be adapted to suit your music flavours from speed death metal to sloth-like slowcore.
All S60 devices are supported and it’s been tested on Nokia 6120 Classic, N82, N91, N93i, N95, E51, E60, E65, E70, E90 Communicator. So whether you’re playing guitar, bass or tambourine, BeatEd is bound to improve your timing and rhythm.
