A gutsy platforming beat-em-up with more surprises and quirky extras than you’d expect.
What’s it good for?
Proving that not all movie re-makes are rubbish, honest!
Judgement time…
Read other reviews on NokNok and you’ll see that movies and TV shows don’t generally make for good mobile games. We panned Heroes: The Game, as its action differed so greatly to the TV original, but it’d be difficult for Die Hard to make the same mistake.
The mobile adaptation of John McClane’s antics is fast, furious and at times brutal. But unexpectedly, it’s also inventive.
Sure, it’s not the most challenging platformer around, but breezing though the levels, it’s clear there’s a ton of thought behind the game’s attack systems. Enemies can be dispatched with explosives, fists and bullets, as well as through less obvious means. We challenge you not to laugh out loud the first time McClane hauls a bad guy over a conveniently-placed piano, or whips their feet from under them while they’re standing on a ledge.
Even fist fights are handled with aplomb. Get into a punch-up with a baddie, and you’ll trigger stylised slow-mo effects with more furious jabs and uppercuts.
Die Hard 4’s level design is a treat too. Side-scrolling sections are broken up with mini-games, while top-down driving sections manage keep the action flowing without feeling samey.
It’s also a true adaptation of the film, with key scenes replicated for you to play through, and yes, you can blow up a helicopter using a car.
Ten out of ten for effort then, it’s just a shame the lead character looks nothing like Bruce Willis, but then, you can’t have it all.
