Lights, cameraphone, action: Spike Lee has been signed up to head Nokia Productions. He’ll be tasked with putting together a feature made entirely from cameraphone footage shot and sent in by the public.
The final film will be made up of three acts and Lee will set assignments for the participants to complete. Anyone can get involved by submitting material through the Nokia Productions website.
Lee will direct the action via the site and there’ll also be other helpers on hand to steer people in the right direction. Once the budding filmmakers are happy with their contribution they’ll be sent off to Lee to judge and the best one from each act will make it into the final film.
Despite being used to working with higher quality material, Lee’s not daunted by the prospect of using cameraphone footage: “In five years, I believe we will be watching films in movie theaters that have been shot on a mobile phone,” he said.
“Today, with state-of-the-art multimedia devices like what Nokia has to offer, you are seeing first hand the democratization of film. Aspiring filmmakers no longer have to go to film school to make great work. With a simple mobile phone, almost anyone can now become a filmmaker.”
So what are you waiting for? Grab your Nok and get shooting.
