With another week almost consigned to the file marked “done,” we’ve trawled through NokNok.tv and the rest of the World Wide Interweb’s best Nokia-related sites to bring you the ten biggest news bits from the past seven days. So buckle up, readers - here’s this week’s best info-nuggets in one easy-to-chew fact-sandwich!
1. Nokia Immortal: the phone that lives for decades
Most of us update our mobiles every 18 months or so (the free blowers given away with contracts make it almost mandatory!) but Nokia wants to change all that. Ever mindful of the evil anti-greenness of chucking away electronics kit, the mighty Finns are beavering away on a handset that lasts for 25 years!
2. Zero waste Nokia charger concept unveiled
Right then, phone chargers… No, don’t run off! This one’s a bit of a doozy. It’s another planet-friendly concept - this time a charger that switches itself off automatically to save energy. You can also peep our exclusive video of it here.
The Nok has dropped a trio of new handsets into our laps, folks: two sliders and a clamshell, to be precise - including the particularly kick-arse 6600 slide (Nokia doesn’t even NEED to use upper-case letters in its phone names) which totes a 3.2-megapixel camera and optional GPS whilst being the smallest slider Nokia’s ever made.
4. Software review: Skype for Mobile (Beta)
God bless Skype: its VoIP service makes long distance calls easier on the wallet - and now it’s popped up on your mobile. What do we think of the new app? Head here for the official NokNok verdict.
5. Nokia adds real time traffic to Maps
We love Nokia Maps, and the direction-giving app has just got even better with the news that it’s now getting traffic updates - which means you can cheekily circumvent snarl-ups and jams on the highways and byways.
6. Second Life coming to a Nokia near you
Its star may be waning somewhat, but Second Life is still the biggest virtual world in the, er, world - and now it’s set its sights on your Nokia blower. Be afraid…
7. Nokia E66 and E71 confirmed?
We ran a story on these two rumoured handsets - nicknamed “Dora” and “Ian” apparently - back in January, and according to this Symbian Freak item, they’re now all but confirmed.
8. Vodafone adds “unlimited” data to all contract accounts
All About Symbian brings glad tidings for Vodafone customers: anyone with a pay monthly contract now gets 500MB of free data - every month!
9. MOSH launches over 800 free games
Nokia’s MOSH sharing service is going game-crazy, spitting out over 800 titles that are absolutely free to play (they’re ad-sponsored, y’see). Darla Mack has the full story.
10. Mile High Pinball out any minute now!
Looking for more games for your N-Gage enabled Nok? Well there’s good news: according to the official N-Gage blog Mile High Pinball will be out in the next couple of days. Crack your knuckles and (ahem) prepare to bash those balls!
