Who needs multi-touch when you can just wave your hands in front of your phone’s face instead?
It may be all about touch now, but people are no doubt going to get fed up of greasy screen smears and finger fatigue from all that prodding, which is why Nokia is working on a touchless 3D interface.
According to a patent application, Nokia bods are busy beavering away on a display that’s packed with Ultrasonic Transducers (USTs). These pump out ultrasonic sound waves into the air and can tell when something comes into their path, like a finger.
This means you can use a whole array of 3D gestures to interact with your phone, rather than the limited number of 2D swipes you’re restricted to with multi-touch. It’ll also help keep your OCD on hold as there’s no physical touching involved. Now, who’s for a game of paper, scissors, stone?
