Want to get online with your laptop, PSP or other bit of wireless gear, but don’t have a Wi-Fi hotspot within range? No problem, pal: if you’ve got a 3G phone and an unlimited data plan, we’ve got you covered. Read on for the walkthrough…

What you’ll need:

A Nokia handset with Wi-Fi and 3G (preferably with an unlimited data plan)

JoikuSpot Light

Step by step:

1. Grab JoikuSpot

JoikuSpot Light is a newly-launched app that transforms any Nok with 3G and Wi-Fi into a WLAN hotspot. It’s easy to use, it works with almost all N and Eseries handsets and it’s totally free, so head over to the website here and download it. Then install it on your Nok.

2. Setting up

Fire up JoikuSpot from your phone’s Applications menu and straight away it’ll ask if you want to allow it to share your Internet connection with external devices. Select “yes”, then select your phone’s 3G web connection when asked for the access point.

3. Hook up your external device

Your hotspot is cocked, locked and ready to rock. Haul out your laptop or other Wi-Fi equipped gizmo and open up its wireless network settings. You should see JoikuSpot listed alongside any other wireless networks in range. Select it, open up your laptop’s web browser and in seconds you should be staring at JoikuSpot’s homepage - congratulations, you’re online via your phone!

4. Get secure

Your access point is currently unsecured, so any old toerag could jump on and steal your data. To prevent this, head into the JoikuSpot settings menu, select Encryption and choose either WEP open or shared. Then anyone trying to use your mobile phone as an access point will need to enter a password key first. Foiled again, Internet-stealers!
