iPhone update prompts Nokia to redesign calculator app

If you thought Nokia engineers had better things to do than chat about the iPhone all day you’d be right. Important things like rewriting the S60 calculator.

The thing that caught the eye of the Nokia developers in the impending new iPhone software release was… its shiny new calculator. Well, that’s people that spend too much time around computers for you.

It then dawned on the team that the S60 calculator hadn’t received even a new lick of paint in the eight years since it was written. Not wanting to let Apple have the upper hand in the adding up stakes, they set to work porting across the newer S40 calculator rather than writing a whole new one from scratch. It’s now sitting in Alpha Labs - the internal equivalent of Beta Labs - so the staff can have a play before it makes its way out onto the web for the public to toy with.

The team are now on the look out for other features that could do with a pick me up - if you’ve got any ideas, then let them know over at the Nokia Conversations blog.
