The European Commission has rubber stamped the Nokia Navteq deal, which means the map maker will be part of Nok’s extended family by the end of next week. All of which means we can expect to see a whole lot more mapping in our handsets as well as other location based services.
The deal was originally announced way back in October last year, with Nokia plumping down a cool $78 a share for the cartography company, which may not sound much at first but amounts to a whopping $8.1billion in total.
Now all the i-s have been dotted and t-s have been crossed, Nokia can now gorge itself on that mapping data like a kid in a sweetshop with an unlimited tab behind the counter. With all that info in house, it’ll no doubt trickle down through the handset range so it won’t just be available at the top tier. We can’t wait to see what Nok’s got waiting in the wings now it’s all signed, sealed and delivered.
