Confused why Nokia is shelling out a shed load of money for the rest of Symbian only to be able to give the software away? David Rivas from Nokia gives a run down on the rational plus also delves into what the future holds for the Symbian Foundation.
In Nokia’s latest The Way We Live Next podcast, Mark Durrant has sat down with David Rivas to quiz him about the recent Symbian Foundation announcement and Nokia’s plans to buy up the rest of Symbian only to give it away.
According to Rivas, acquiring the remaining shares of Symbian was necessary to establish the foundation in the first place. Nokia also gains some talented engineers in the process, which is no bad thing.
Moving onto the plans for the Symbian Foundation, after it’s got the ball rolling in the second half of 2009 by licensing the current software on a royalty free basis it’ll then work on bringing all the different interfaces together so there’s just one unified platform. However, Rivas has confirmed that the new platform will be backward compatible with S60 Edition 3 so current apps will continue to work.
