Nokia buys up location site Plazes

Nokia has completed its acquisition of Plazes - a website that’s a bit like Twitter but allows you to say where you are as well as what you’re doing. This is just the latest on a list of location based buy ups for Nokia, what with its takeover of Navteq, not to mention what it’s already doing with mapping and GPS.

This is just the latest on a list of location based buy ups for Nokia, what with its takeover of Navteq, not to mention what it’s already doing with mapping and GPS.

By integrating all these different bits, Nokia could be become a major player in location based services. When you combine that with Nokia’s plans to shift a huge number of GPS enabled handsets these recent acquisitions start to make sense.

Plazes will no doubt find its way onto Ovi over time and it would even make sense if it could be integrated with the new Nokia Chat location based instant message app that’s currently in testing.
