ScanR review

You’re a busy executive with no time to waste typing in facts or writing down addresses (or perhaps, like us, just can't be bothered). What you need is a digital secretary to sweat the small stuff while you brainstorm paradigm-shifting business dynamics... or just surf Lolcats for giggles.

ScanR is a smart sliver of an app that digests all manner of written material using your Nokia’s camera, before spitting it out as emails, faxes, text documents or PDFs.

Read on to find out if it really can hack it in the cut-throat world of mobile scanners.

Getting going is simple – visit ScanR’s website, register and enter your phone number. Responding to a text message link lets you download the correct version direct to your handset. Next step is to snap a business card, document or whiteboard with your camera. You’ll need a macro mode, plenty of light and ensure you fill the frame whatever you’re scanning. Then fire up ScanR on your phone, browse thumbnails and select the image for upload. You can choose whether to view the results online only, or also send them as an email or fax.  My 2MB test file – an Olympus warranty flyer - took just 20 seconds to upload via Wi-Fi.

Within minutes, I received an email with a link to the ScanR website. Here you can view the scan and download files as PDF, JPEG or plain text – although sadly not as a digital business card (.vcf). All the images were very legible and even the OCR text file was pretty good – it slightly garbled just one phone number and an address, both printed in very small type.

However, you'll need to be using a phone with a decent megapixel count such as an N96, N85 or E71 - 2-megapixel or less won't cut it sadly.

ScanR is a fine choice for the time-pressed road warrior then, as long as you get your personal assistant to trial your camera phone before signing up to the reasonable monthly subscription.
