Firmware updates for N95 and N85 now available

Nokia may have a swanky new mobile in the works, but it's still got some love for the older generation.

The N95 and N85 are the latest handsets to be visited by the firmware fairy, so you can bring your phone bang up to date with the latest, greatest fixes and features.

There doesn't appear to be any new add-ons in the new N95 v31.0.014 update, but users that have already loaded it up are reporting speed improvements and increased stability due to bug fixes.

The N85 v11.047 update brings three notable new features. There's now support for an add-on DVD-H accessory, bring the potential for mobile telly - although not until we get any broadcasts in that format over here.

If you're short on storage, then you'll welcome support for 16GB microSD cards and the N85 now includes the Nokia Software Checker app as seen on other handsets that can check for new firmware automatically for you.

    Hi

Tried posting this question on a a couple of boards but can’t get an answer.

I have one of the first N95-1′s still running the original firmware. I have tracking on my GPS even when not using the network. Will the new firmware remove the tracking feature? I’ve heard that upgrading will remove tracking but can’t seem to determine if it’s upgrades to the firmware or to the GPS app. specifically. I have upgraded Nokia Maps and still have the tracking, which is really important to me for several reasons.

    Thanks Al

So as far as I can work out, GPS tracking will only be on if you’re running a GPS app. It doesn’t have to be Nokia Maps, it could be Gmaps, Sports Tracker, FriendView or Nokia viNe – anything that requires GPS, basically. So, the update shouldn’t affect tracking – but….. you need to be sure that’s the right interpretation of tracking. Is it?

In other words, if you’re running a GPS app, your phone will be monitoring your location (as best it can, given view of sats etc)

    n95 v31 firmware = VAPORWARE.
Go see for yourself, the rumor of a new firmware seems to prove how untrustworthy internet news is, even on device specific sites dedicated to the devices they claim to care about.
