Mozilla, makers of the Firefox web browser, have revealed that they are developing a mobile version for phones on the Symbian platform.

Until recently development for the browser, which is dubbed "Fennec", was focussed on versions for Linux Maemo and Windows Mobile devices. However, Mozilla's Christian Sejersen says that, with Symbian-based phones now accounting for almost half the total smartphone sales, it was time to bring Fennec to the platform, and Mozilla are currently working together with engineers from Symbian to port the browser over.

If things go to plan, a full browsing-enabled version will be available by April 2009, according to Sejersen, and a basic version could be out as soon as February. These will be alpha and maybe beta releases, of course - the fully finished, bug-free Fennec won't be out for some time. We'll bring you more on the browser early next year.
