Saving the world from hordes of genetically altered zombies is satisfying, but sometimes you want something a little... calmer. From the moment Bounce Boing Voyage’s cartoon characters and soothing Tweenie-alike baby music kick in, you know you’re in for a soothing, mildly amusing experience.
The premise of the game is cheerfully simple: a flying cube of tofu called Hypnotoid has – you guessed it – hypnotised the inhabitants of the floating world of Pongpingy. You are a small red ball and thus the perfect choice to liberate its mesmerised people, a feat you can accomplish by collecting balloons and solving a series of simple puzzles.
Bounce Boing Voyage looks fantastic – your Bounce ball swirls through channels and jumps over blocks extremely naturally, and the various characters and worlds you encounter are imaginatively realised. But once you’ve leapt over a number of obstacles, pushed a few buttons and captured a few balloons, it all starts to feel a little safe – even with the excitement of occasionally being able to change shape (to Rock or Mud).
Bounce Ball Voyage would the perfect game to keep a small child quiet for a hour or so – as long as you trust them with your shiny N-series handset . However, even kids will eventually see through the lush 3D graphics and realise that ultimately they’re playing just another run-of-the-mill platformer.
