Living With: Nokia 5800 review

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in the handThe Nokia 5800, or the Nok formally known at XpressMusic, arrived over the weekend, so we’ve had all of 48 hours to get used to it. This is a full retail version, so all the documentaton, cables and even a funky little stand came with it.

The first thing you’ll notice about this phone is how easy it is to get the SIM loaded, it’s simply a tab on the side, so no messing about with hiding away under the battery, and how simple it is to get to grips with the interface.

The screen test

Given that this is Nokia’s first attempt at a proper touchscreen display, we’re a little more than impressed. We were expecting the screen to feel soft around the edges like some other bigger smartphones we can think of, but it feels nice and tough and responds amazingly quickly to any firm pressure. There's a sensor, so if you're on a call you won't accidently press buttons, which is a nice touch.

The 3.2-inch screen has a 360 × 640-pixel resolution, which is great for those with chubby fingers as it means icons are bigger and bolder. It also means you can watch videos in a decent window, we lost quite a bit of time on YouTube proving this to be more than practical.

When it comes to getting about, the larger screen icons make it easy to grab scroll bars and navigating the main screen is easy. The accelerometer works well, switching the screen from portrait to landscape mode in a single refresh. So far, we’re more than happy with what’s on offer. There’s a stylus tucked away at the back of the device but we found it just as easy to tap away with our thumbs.

It’s all about the music

The Nokia 5800 isn’t only going up to some stiff opposition in the touchscreen market, it’s also hoping to shift units in the tough media player market. To this end we’ve been looking at the built in media player. Instead of being a software tab, you’ll find a quick access button above the screen that allows you quick access to your main needs – music, movies, the internet and even your favourite sites. This is a nice touch and works really well, as it means you don’t have to go messing about to start your music player. We found that files loaded relatively quickly and the sound quality is far superior to other phones we’ve tested out of late.

The little extras

It’s a 3G phone with 3.6Mbps HSDPA, plus GPRS, EDGE support. You’ll also find Bluetooth and Wi-Fi built-in as standard. When it comes to getting these connections running this is an incredibly easy phone to handle. Setting up the built-in Wi-Fi connection had us hooked up to our wireless LAN network in a matter of moments, so making the most of hotspots when out and about is a doddle. There’s a whole host of applications pre-installed, from Maps V2 to the core browser and backup tools that we’ll be looking at in-depth over the next couple of weeks.

Living with the Nokia 5800

It’s early days yet but the Nokia 5800 has quickly become something of a favourite. We’re going to be living with this device for quite a while, looking at how it handles in the real world and whether it’s worth getting really excited about this phone.

Things to love about the Nokia 5800:

Screen: 3.2-inch screen feels solid and responds well to a firm touch

Interface: Simple, elegant and easy to get to grips with

Media Player: Simple to use but too back back clicks

Music: The sound quality is sharp and the bundled headphones actually usable

What do you want us to test out on the Nokia 5800? Let us know in the comments below and we'll report back in future Living With sessions.

@Jenniferr – I noticed a similar problem as you the other day. For some reason when I’d put some songs and videos on they’d gone to the phone memory instead of the card memory. To move them, press the middle (white) button to go to the main menu, then “Applications” then “File mgr.”. Select “C: Phone memory” (it’ll probably look pretty full!) and then just go through the folders underneath (it’s a bit of a pain, but…). When you find a file that should be somewhere else, click on it to select it, then select “Options” -> “Organize” -> “Move To Folder”. You’ll then get prompted to select “C: Phone Memory” or “E: Card ..” so select the Card option and you can move the files to the right place. Once you’ve done them all you’ll need to go to the music player and refresh the library.

I haven’t seen any options for setting the default location but I haven’t tried loading stuff for a few days. If I find one, I’ll let you know.

    Hope this helps.

PS – The other option is to do this with your phone connected to your PC which may be easier!

I set my 4 screen contacts up on my Nokia 5800 xpress music but now I don’t get a tone/vibrate when I get a message and that’s not just from the contacts on screen but all the other contacts as well, I have to physcally go into the messaging menu for anyone but my contacts and check for new messages, contacts come up with a star but no tone/vibrate. The text tone is set up in my profile so why isn’t it working when I get a text? Tried to get through to Nokia but completely useless so thought I give this site a try. PS I had that prob with the Sim card when I first got the phone, Vodafone sent me a bigger Sim and I just transferred everything over – all fine now… Hope someone can help with the text tone prob… Ta

Hi am thinking of getting the 5800, but have been warned that the keylock on touch screen phones comes off easily. has anyone found this the case

  • james

    hi,
i am trying to save contacts onto my sim using the nokia 5800 expressmusic phone. i am have trouble as there is no option to allow you to use sim to save messages….have any ideas…?

    thanks.

  • Jo

Mike – regarding the key lock function. I’ve only had my 5800 for a few days but so far no probs with the key lock and my phone gets bundled around in my handbag, jeans pockets etc. It’s a sliding button type function on the side of the phone so I would say there is as much risk of this becoming unlocked as when using the Menu * function on keypad phones.
I love the phone, but I am finding the battery life pretty darn short – recent example, less than 48 hours, and from one charge to the next I only made 1 phone call, received 2 messages and sent 2 messages! I gather from friends that touch screen phones do drain the battery more than key pad phones, but as this is my first touch screen I’m finding it pretty hard to come to terms with – I’m used to almost a weeks worth of battery life!!

  • fhatz

Hi, I would just like to ask if you know how to back-up text messages from memory card? like if i could copy the messages to my computer so that in case i need to reformat my memory card, i would still be able to restore my messages. :) thanks!

  • Tom

I have a problem with a brand new 5800, cannot get voice commands to work. When I double click on the menu in settings it will not open up. Tried hard reset, reloading firmware and Nokia help desk – all to no benefit..Anyone have any bright ideas to fix this – I otherwise like this phone a lot

  • denyze

    Hihi!

I jus got my 5800 as well for a month already.I had both old songs and new songs from nokia music store. I could only use tones from the old songs batch, not the new ones. Sad. Even when I change try changing the tones through profile section, it never open for selection. help!

  • kat

    hi
can you tell me how to put pins on the nokia 5800 e.g. screen lock so it asks for a pin to enter ??

  • http://www.tenyearsofpics.blogspot.com Patrick Dodds

I have one of these on a T-Mobile contract. Can you explain why:
    1. I have changed the homepage to Google but I still get an unreadably small load of advertorial from T-Mobile when I start the browser?
    2. The battery life goes from four out of five bars to low battery warning in the space of less than ten minutes browsing and about 2 hours of standby?
    3. When I hit \"search\" on google, I am repeatedly taken back to the text entry box?
Thanks – I hate both this phone and T-Mobile, but maybe there is something I am doing wrong?

  • http://www.tenyearsofpics.blogspot.com Patrick Dodds

@Alison – have you changed the profile to “silent”?

  • http://www.tenyearsofpics.blogspot.com Patrick Dodds

@ Rachel – I gave up on downloading the software – I thought I was getting something small and easy to use, not a whole media-management programme.

  • http://www.tenyearsofpics.blogspot.com Patrick Dodds

@Mike – I’ve had the phone a couple of weeks and haven’t noticed this problem (lots of others tho!).

Can someone please help? My phone has just decided to stop sending messages, i can recieve them ok but when I try to reply its just storing them in the outbox. I’ve contacted my sevice provider and they can find no faults with my network. My sim card is working in other phones. Any help, much appreciated

  • John Butterfield

Hey, I have had an N95 for about 18 months and about 7 months ago it stopped working online. I can still do a search on the Yell and Yahoo apps but no other browsing or internet access whatsoever!!!

Shortly after it packed in, I contacted O2 and they sent me emails and SMS suggesting fixes and nothing worked. O2 suggested I send it back to them and they replace it with another but after an earlier bad experience with them regarding an LG Chocolate (Ugh, remember that!!) I decided to live with it.

I have today ordered an 5800 and want to give the N95 to a pal but would like to have it working in fully operational order. I am sure it is something as simple as a setting but I have tried everything.

Anybody else come across this problem?

  • Paul Stevenson

    Hey,

I’m thinking about going on to a contract with the Noki 5800, but I don’t know if it is the right phone to choose. i’ve been checking out reviews and a lot of them say that they have had a problem, so is it really worth buying or should I choose a different phone? I also wondered if you could put your own music on the phone because none of the reviews I have read have said anything about this.

    Thanks.

  • jilly_liz

  • Paul Stevenson

Thanks. I also wanted to know if you can put your own music on it aswell. Would you reccomend it then?

  • Mikey Bee

@Paul. yup you can put your own music on there – I’ve stuffed mine with all sorts of MP3 files – even got Morrissey MP3 as my ring tone, not that proves anything other than I love Morrissey!

  • Mikey Bee

Oh, should also point out that the sound quality from the built-in speakers is great, also nice and loud. One of the best phones for music out there IMHO

  • Paul Stevenson

Have you had any problems with any aspect of the phone Mikey Bee?

  • Mollie

Hey. I have had my 5800 for about 7 months and I LOVE it! I love that the memory is so good, actually bigger than my iPod, and so I just use it instead of my iPod. Today, though, when I went to connect my 5800 to my laptop using the USB cable, my laptop doesn’t pick it up. I normally select ‘Media Transfer’, and when this didn’t work, tried them all; none of them worked. I have tried inserting the USB cable to the port at the side and the back of my laptop but no luck. Do you have any ideas?

  • Burty

Why, oh why, oh why, have people lost the ability to write English in the proper manner?!! I’m trying to read reviews for the 5800 as I was thinking of getting one but I am none the wiser as I can’t understand what the hell people are going on about!! Is this what people are being taught in schools there days? I very much doubt it but I do wonder….

  • Dave Coram

    Hi!

Have just got my 5800 – is there any way of setting it up so that, when you get a new text message (SMS), it comes up with who the message is from, rather than just ’1 message received’?

Any help will be gratefully received!

    Ta in advance!

  • jilly_liz

Hi hope someone can help ive just put lots of musice into my 5800 but when i try to play it iy just locks me out wiyh a key next to the track what do i do? anybody………….

  • Emily

This phone generally is a very good phone. I have had it for about 5 months now and I was getting along with it well, the only downside is it’s very hard to text unless you use the stylus or if you have small fingers. I have had a few problems with the type of sim card i can use in it and i know that many people have had the same problems.

The memory is good and the camera quality is VERY good, sound also very good.

Good music phone but if you are needing the phone for just texting and calling I would advise you to go for a different phone.

  • Daniel Walker

Does this phone have GPS? I have heard it does but you have to go to a Nokia shop and get it activated. If it does have GPS, how good is it? GPS would be a massive attraction to this phone for me.

  • steve quinnnell

I have had my 5800 for a few weeks now, had no problems at all.
Much better then the Iphone, except looks (personal preference) and UI.
I have the comes with music edition with free music for two years, already saved the cost of the phone in music alone.
I have Garmin xt sat-nav installed which works faultlessly.

  • shellie

  • Karim

ARGGHHH, i have had this phone since April and it has not stopped dissapointing me.
ok for starters, it randomly decides to switch itself off,
the Bluetooth doesn\’t work, whenever i try to switch it on it goes \"unable to perform Bluetooth operation\"
and now whenever i receive a text from my contacts (who i KNOW i have saved cuz i noticed it when my girlfriend and best friend texted me) and instead of my contact name showing up in the \’from\’ bar.. it just gives me the number,, its REALLY starting to piss me off.
    can anyone PLEAAAAAAASSSSSSE help me?

  • Chamy

I have had a samsung blush for 3 years!!! But now i am allowed to buy a new phone :) is this phone worth buying because there seems to be a lot of problems.. or have these been sorted out.. any comments appreciated, regards chamy

  • Simon

For all those complaining of the callers name not being displayed, only the number, even though your contact is saved in the address book I’d suggest checking that you don’t have multiple entries for the same number. It’s quite easy to do this, especially if you’ve imported from your old SIM card. It the phone finds more than one entry, it will only display the number as it doesn’t know which one is right. That includes the speed dial shortcuts, too – make sure these are set up to point to an existing contact, don’t create a new one.
