BBC iPlayer on Nokia 5800

Have you thought of watching the BBC iPlayer on your Nokia 5800 yet? Yes, we know it’s only officially available for the Nokia N96 and Nokia N85 devices but the link to the software sits there ever so temptingly on the Downloads page of the Nokia 5800.

It’s something we’ve been meaning to do for the last few days so we finally took the plunge and downloaded the software. Read on to find out what we discovered…

An interesting story popped up recently over on Mobile about the BBC iPlayer and how smartphones will be the driving force for the service in the coming years. According to the piece, the BBC will be making a heavy bid for the mobile community, quoting Richard Titus, the BBC’s future media controller of audio, music and mobile, of saying: ‘The Nokia launch was the first major proposition where we were really focusing on the mobile version of the product.’

It goes on to state that the BBC will be rolling out further device specific launches but never goes into any details about Nokia phones. The thing is, if you go to the Downloads section of your Nokia 5800 you’ll see BBC iPlayer sat there waiting to be downloaded.

Here comes the science...

We’d like to point out before you go any further there hasn’t been any official word as to whether this will natively support the Nokia 5800, so don't go blundering in. Anyway, it downloads and sets itself up within a couple of minutes. So we thought we’d give it a go…

It’s all handled in the background by RealPlayer, which is no real surprise, because it loads quickly enough. The touchscreen makes it easy to move around the page but iPlayer isn’t exactly the most user-friendly of interfaces, so actually working your way around the screen can be a bit of a pain.

The page can be viewed in Portrait or Landscape mode, as you'll see from our images below. Getting to the programs is a little tricky but you'll find that TV shows load reasonably well. The problems tend to begin a minute or so in, as you're never guarenteed a decent picture for long.

Sadly, we found the programmes tended to break up a little too much for our liking, even strange and eeiry 'Dalek' voices making an appearance at times. This isn't the fault of the Nokia 5800, as it's got a cracking Wi-Fi connection, and the S60 platform is robust enough. So, surely it's down to the way the BBC codes iPlayer?

So, what have we learnt? Well, there is a VERY good reason why the software needs to be device specific and that's because it'a not the most robust of tools - the question is, when will the BBC get a solution that works, as we want to watch telly on our Nok... come on BBC, sort it out!

Have you actually played anything yet? When I tried, a message popped up onto the screen to it will only work with a WIFI connection, which is kind of dumb considering I am on fast Internet. Come to think of it, it said the same thing to me on my Nokia N95. I could never get it to work.

Looking at the small print on the BBC site, it’s intended to be played through the Wi-Fi connection – for best results anyway. THis is how I was testing it out, got 8MB broadband so you’d think it would be nice and quick but it’s all sputtery, not exactly the next-gen solution I was hoping for!

I’ve tried iPlayer on my 5800 and had no joy whatsoever. If I download the files to my PC and transfer them across via PC Suite my 5800 tells me that I have not transferred the DRM rights. And accessing the iPlayer website via my WLAN is impossibly slow. Maybe I need to wait before they sort out the bugs?

  • Owen

like so many people i can access the iplayer but come across “you need a wifi connection” to work dispite having a reasonable wireless broadband connection i’ve been told dispite having the iplayer on the phone it is only really meant for phones specifically designed with it in mind such as the nokia n95 or the iphone for example.

    Anyone still reading this?

I got a 5800 on Saturday and iplayer ran perfectly (well, a little play-before-ready buffering issue at the start but give it some time and everything plays smoothly).

However, I noticed iplayer was offering a version upgrade so I went ahead and downloaded it – now I can’t play anything, getting the stupid “You need to be connected to wifi to view iplayer” message, or whatever it says.

I hope there’s a fix soon, or a possibility of downgrading to the preloaded version…

    I think we’ve a follow-up story here – will look into it…

For any owner of the nokia 5800 who downloads the newer voersion of Bbciplayer you need to update your firmware via the official nokia website with the supplied cable and it is an easy thing to do as i had the 11. firmware and my Bbci player worked ok but i was tempted with the download update and it refused to work but now i have updated the firmware to 20.0 they is no problem at all and my wifi is only 2mb so update your firmware and it will reslove the many issues that have been posted with the bbci player and to close i download the programs on the pc then move them over to my 5800 so quite handy if your in the car park and have a few moments

OPPS…sorry for the typos but i rushed the typing..

I have down loaded lots of bbci progs onto the laptop first , then moved them over to the 5800 phone via usb and they all worked 100% .

  • Andrew

Robin, could you expand on that? I\’ve tried doing it too, but they won\’t play. I\’ve also tried downloading via my laptop directly on to the phone, but they still won\’t play. Would you be able to type out the exact process you use (if it\’s not too much trouble) so i can see where I\’m going wrong?

Hi Andrew , when you down load from BBci use the portable devices option , copy the file to my video dir on the phone and play , if you want to keep the file , you would have to convert it first , use Daniusoft media converter pro and convert to mp4 because all bbci files are drm . Make sure your firm ware is upto date. bye

ill say. When i arrived in uk in sept 09 i could just use browser to view iplayer. Then one day it forced me to download their app. Now it wont stream, but will download. COME ON BBC ARE YOU THICK OR LAZY, and come on nokia, 5800 is a terrible phone. I miss my iPhone! This sux

  • Barry

To download from BBC iplayer and transfer to the nokia 5800 you need to make sure you upgrade your security rights so that it allows DRM rights to download too. The instuctions on how to do this are on BBC iplayer site when you click on download to portable devices and then go to instuctions.

I have a very different problem with iplayer on my 5800. When trying to selct a programme the programme bufers but then keeps stopping and starting and the words of the person speaking are out of synch with the mouth when watching the tv programme.
