Resident Evil: Degeneration (N-Gage)

Resident Evil: Degeneration is the latest zombie-packed instalment of the survival horror game that, if the truth be known, started them all. Released simultaneously with a CGI (re)animated movie of the same name and roughly the same plot, Degeneration is set in an airport in America’s mid-West.

If you think Terminal Five at Heathrow is bad, you should try the departure lounge at Harvardville: not only has a 747 has crashed into the gate, unleashing a deadly zombie virus, but there isn’t even anywhere to get a pint.

You’re playing a secret Government agent, parachuted in to rescue a big-wig politician with nothing more than a sharp knife and a small handgun. Gameplay is standard first-person shooter, letting you explore freely and collect items lying about - including a remarkable quantity of handgun ammunition for a security-cleared airport. They are plenty of zombies to shoot (in the head, naturally) and some basic puzzles to solve.

What elevates Resident Evil games above the competition, and what’s particularly impressive given the N-gage’s small screen and modest sound, is the atmosphere Capcom brings to the action. Spooky music and sound effects twist their way into your head, matching the understated graphics to ratchet up the tension.

Aiming the gun has a handy assist function to snap you in to the correct target even if you’re bumping around on a bus and there’s (just) enough variation to keep you entertained throughout its one- to two-hour story mode.

But don’t worry – when you complete that, you can go back and polish up your skills in a Mercenary mode, complete with online rankings. Resident Evil: Degeneration will appeal to anyone who has ever wanted to whip out a 9mm and blast their way through the shuffling hordes at Stansted. Take that, EasyJet!
