F-Secure Mobile Security review

F-Secure Mobile Security is an anti-virus app to protect your precious Nokia from all manner of mobile malware. It’s designed to catch viruses, worms and Trojans regardless of how they’re spread – email, web or even Bluetooth.
The small, fast installation requires a reboot of your handset, then enter the app to download the latest updates (I needed about 250KB worth to begin with) and activate them.

F-Secure then works in the background to monitor emails and Bluetooth links, and firewall your web browsing. It will automatically update itself – with a tariff-friendly option to only do some when it’s in your home Wi-Fi network.

I didn’t notice any slowdown in surfing or communicating on my N81, although you can always switch the app into Manual instead of Real-time scanning if your handset is feeling sluggish. Similarly, you can adjust the firewall from its automatic settings to low, high, deny all or allow all, depending on your level of paranoia. There are even manual port and FTP settings for any hard-core techies.

F-Secure will also scan files already on your handset. Ripping through the 1500+ files on my phone took just a couple of a minutes and (thankfully) revealed no infections.

Nearly 40 quid is a steep price for a year’s protection but if you’re a road warrior who banks and buys on the move – or just someone who’s careless who they accept Bluetooth links from – it could be a good investment. If only PC security software was this fast, efficient and painless to use.
