With Mobile World Congress starting on Monday 16th Feb in Barcelona, it’s a safe bet that Nokia will be making some pretty big announcements. The main press conference will be kicking off at 10am on the Monday, opening up the whole congress with a mighty big bang.
What will Nokia announce at Mobile World Congress? This is the question we've asked ourselves. There are plenty of possibilities, and enough rumours circulating to make a few assumptions. Join us, as we take a trip through the rumour mill...
While The Nokia Netbook has a fantastic ring to it, this one was never likely to get off the drawing board. After all, It’d take a re-imagining of the Symbian OS, require a different set of component suppliers and unless it went out across all networks seems hardly worth the investment. We think the up-coming Nokia N97 fills many of the gaps that a netbook would fill, and you can put it in your pocket too.
Look at it this way, netbooks have gathered a lot of press in the last 12 months, but when you look at the figures they don’t add up. This year they estimate 35 million netbooks will be sold world wide, while the smartphone weighs in at a lofty 230 million units. On a commercial level, the maths simply don’t make this one stack up.
So, chances of this one being real and Nokia launching a Netbook? We think snowballs and hell come to mind but it was fun contemplating what it would look like.
Is it actually a device or is this one just a concept device that has gotten out of hand? The Nokia E75 looks pretty darn real, with Expanys even posting up a pre-order page. Then again, Expansys is infamous for putting up devices that have yet to see a real launch date, so this could just be another case of smoke and mirrors.
It’s got all the hallmarks of a mid-range Nok but then again the styling seems a little different, a cross between E and N Series devices. For our money, this one looks like a fairly safe bet, we’re just hoping it’s stacked with plenty of new apps to give it a real chance of competing against the E71.
This one started life as a single throwaway line on a Russian blog and within the space of 24 hours gathered an amazing amount of news coverage. Is it likely to get announced? For our money it’s a great idea and should well be top of everyone’s want list, as it’ll bring together developers, third-party apps and customers together in one place.
If Nokia can turn the idea of an Apps Store on its head, the same way they did with Comes With Music, and deliver a forward looking proposition, this could be worth more than all the new devices at MWC put together.
What do you think, will Nokia announce any of them, all of them, or something completely different? Let us know what you think...
