Mobile World Congress is under way and the first story out of the traps is the announcement that Nokia will indeed be launching its own Apps Store.
While we were hoping this would be one uber-site that would also encompass Comes With Music, it seems that Ovi Store will concentrate simply on apps for the time being.
It is expected the Ovi Store will be launched in May and will be made available to current Nokia device users using a small update. The first full device to ship with integrate supported for Ovi Store will be the Nokia N97, or so it is rumoured. The release also sites June as the month when the Nokia N97 will finally ship.
From the press announcement, Ovi Store ‘will consolidate the best experiences from the current content services including Download!, MOSH and WidSets to a single channel, and expands upon Ovi Services to deliver media influenced by the people and places that matter to you.’
This all sounds great news as it means users will be able to get what they want, when they want from a single source. To enable developers to bring their wares to market quicker, we’ll also see the launch of publish.ovi.com that will work through a dashboard interface to monitor how well the software is selling.
This all sounds like great news and come May we’ll be able to check out the service for ourselves.
