Nokia almost has more photo apps than Finland has pickled fish, so what makes Nokia Image Exchange different? This S60 3.1/3.2 download combines online and offline picture browsing in one of the most seamless experiences to date.
The small download installs easily and starts by automatically creating an account for you at the Image Exchange website, sending you an SMS message with your log-in details. It then goes online and backs-up all your mobile images – although only after politely warning you that transferring ‘very large’ amounts of data can result in ‘surprising’ data costs. It recommends using a Wi-Fi connection for the initial back-up, after which it automatically uploads each photo as you shoot it.
The Image Exchange interface is excellent, a vertically-divided window giving you the option to browse local or online photos. Pictures on your handset can be viewed by Latest, Time (split into months), Favourites (a one-click process) and Search (20-image thumbnails). Those online can again be browsed as Latest (including all Public pictures), Comments, People (images shared by your friends), Favourites and your own Shared snaps.
Both browsers work exceptionally smoothly and let you zoom, pan or rotate images but not edit them. You can invite friends (by SMS) to join your Image Exchange network, and there’s a great web portal, too. Here you can log in with your mobile phone number to view images and download them to your desktop as a
Zipped file, or upload pictures from your PC which are immediately shared with your phone.
Basically, this is the fastest, easiest and most intuitive photo browsing app we’ve seen yet for Nokia phones - and that includes the Ovi service. Auto registration, log in and back-up make keeping your images organised totally effortless, and the two-way features are almost perfect. Highly recommended.
