Full 1080p on your Nokia smartphone

Every thought you could watch Full HD, that's 1080p to the likes of you and me, on your Nokia smartphone? Well, it seems we may be on the verge of getting it. Nokia has entered into an agreement ST-Ericsson to work together to amke it a reality. The thing is, we may even see it in action before the summer!

This is the top story happening in your Nokia neighbourhood this morning. We'll have full details after the jump, along with our other top stories include Ovi Store versus Apple Store, Nokia Magnifier and the death of the smartphone ?

Full 1080p on your Nokia smartphone

Full HD on your Nokia could well be seen in demo form, at least, later this year. It's all centred around the ST-Ericsson’s U8500 single chip, which according to the press release incorporates a state-of-the-art HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) Release 7 modem, which will allow for faster data packages to be carry over the network, something that is essential if Full HD is to be a reality.

It's all made possible by improvements on the chip. The press release breaks it down as 'The U8500, which relies on the Nomadik application-processor technology, integrates the latest SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing) ARM dual-Cortex A9 CPU in a high-performance, low-power and cost-optimized platform supporting Symbian Foundation software. The chip is the first device enabling full High-Definition 1080 progressive-scan camcorder functions.'

The guys over at JKontherun brought the news to our attention but looking a little more into it, we're still some way away from actually Full HD on our Noks any time soon, as it's more a statement of intent. However, the idea of watching Full HD movies on a 3.5-inch, or larger, screen would be great.

Ovi Store v Apple Store

When Nokia announced the Ovi Store will be launching in May earlier this week at MWC one of the big moans from a lot of people was 'oh, they're simply copying Apple', which is simply stupid as Apple didn't really come up with the concept of offering stuff to people, surely? Anyway, Nokia Experts has managed to get the drop on what this means in reality by putting together a great face-off between the two stores. It looks at a number of aspects on how both stores work, even down to how developers will be treated. Great stuff on the Ovi Store, guys.

Nokia Magnifier released by Beta Labs

Ever thought you could use the camera on your Nokia to do more than take snaps of your family and friends? Well, you can now use your S60 phone as a giant magnifying glass thanks to a new app launched by the good guys over at Beta Labs. Nokia Magnifier takes the camera and adds a higher degree of stability, to reduce hand shake, and adds a slice of sharpener so images, especially print, are easier to read. It's a neat little trick and it was brought to our attention by the guys over at Slashphone.

The death of the smartphone?

Are we about to see the end of the smartphone as the symbol of the daily commute? We think not, but it looks like the smartphone will soon be seen in the hands of the average man on the street. Business Week has a nice little roundup from Mobile World Congress that looks at the state of the smartphone and how it's no longer the preserve of the business user.

The quote that caught our eye was, 'Meanwhile at Nokia's press event, its president and CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, also took up this theme by debunking the myth that the 'E' in its E-Series of phones stands solely for 'Enterprise'. He said: "In the past many believed that our E-Series is exclusively for enterprise. But that's simply not the case. Today E-Series stands for 'efficiency'."'

Now, we've know for sometime that even the E Series have been falling into hands of the the every man, and so they should. Most people we know who own a E Series have bought it out of their own cash and tend to use it for work as well as for social reasons. What about you, was your Nok issued to you or was it something you went out and bought because you 'needed to have it'?
