The Nokia 5800 comes with a 3.2-megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss lens. It also incorporates a 30 fps video camera, which is great for video capture. These small clips can be shared with friends or posted to social networking sites, such as Ovi Share. Alternatively, you can use the clips as a ringtone or even assigned to a contact.
Here we take a look at the video editing options on the Nokia 5800, allowing you to get even more from this great little device.
The camera on your Nokia 5800 can record in a full 30 frames per second (fps) at a resolution of 640 x 320 pixels, which makes it perfect for quick video clips. What’s more, once you’ve captured them, you can make quick in camera edits, such as changing the aspect ratio and even zooming in. The Nokia 5800 is a cracking little smartphone and Nokia's first full touchscreen device. If you're new to the device then you may want to check our Nokia 5800 review.
Capturing video works in exactly the same way as taking a photo, you just need to specify video mode from the options on the right-hand side of the screen. You start and end filming by tapping the red Record button on the screen, or by pressing the Capture button the end side of the 5800.
Once you’ve saved the clip you’ll be able to play it back as an MPEG 4 file simply by tapping on it. As with any video you’ll find that with a little bit of prudent editing you’ll be able to make even more of it. In Gallery, choose Options and you’ll find a range of tools to help you make the most of your video clip.
Send
You can share your video with anybody either using Bluetooth as an attachment in Mail for Echange or uploading it using Ovi Share or Vox. However, we’d suggest waiting until you’ve edited the clip before sending it.
Edit
This is the option you want to make the most of your video clip. You’ll find the options on offer are Merge, Change sound, Add Text and Cut. To our mind, the only problem with this app is that it’s not laid out in the most intuitive manner, as you’ll need to work from the bottom up to make the most of them.
Cut
This is a great way of losing the rubbish bits of a clip at the start and finish simply by trimming to the part you want. It works by setting new marker flags alone a time line. Simply scroll to where you want your clip to start and finish and cut to fit.
Add Text
This is a great feature if you want to have text in your clip, as you can add it either to the start or the end. Simply choose Add Text, type in your words then select where you want them to go. It couldn’t be easier. This works well if you’re intending to add the slip as a contact ringtone, as you can add their name and details as a mental reminder.
Change sound
You don’t need to limit yourself to the sound captured by the built-in mic, as you can add a ringtone or clip of music you’ve already got stored on your phone. Select this option and follow the onscreen controls to choose your music clip. This is great if you’re going to use the whole clip as your ringtone, or even as a video contact.
Merge
A great way to avoid full editing is by merging your movies. Choose a clip and select ‘Options’ followed by ‘Edit’ and ‘Merge’. Pick another clip and your phone will combine the two – it’s a great for linking your videos without the long process of importing them to the editor.
