N-Gage:Metal Gear Solid Mobile review

Shhh, it’s Metal Gear Solid Mobile on the N-Gage, the quietest game you’ve played since you realised Dead Donkeys was just a way for Mum to get you lying down silently while she enjoyed a cup of tea.

If you’ve never encountered the MGS franchise, you’ve probably been held kidnap for the last decade by rogue arms dealers with nuclear-missile toting robots - in which you’re about due to be rescued by the ninja-tastic Solid Snake.

This 3D stealth adventure game’s move to mobile is simply inspired. Yes, you lose some of the subtlety in controlling Snake as he sneaks through warehouses, dodges security cameras and solves puzzles, although you can still press yourself up against walls, crawl through spaces and scale ladders. The real revolution is in how Konami harnesses the power of your Nokia, using your phone’s camera as part of the gameplay.

Most of the gameplay is played in top-down third person mode, with cut-away 3D action as necessary.

This is great for navigating rooms, choosing and using items and keeping an eye on that all-important radar. But when you’re stuck in a busy room, or aiming a sniper rifle, you can flip into first-person mode. Here, the game uses your camera to control your viewpoint – swing the phone to the left and the on-screen action moves with it.

It’s smooth and impressive, although you might get some funny looks if you try it on the bus (you can always use keys instead). The camera also lets you picks a real-world colour for your chameleon camouflage suit.

It’s this kind of attention to detail that makes MGS Mobile a must-have. The plot is as twisty and windy as the gameplay, the occasionally complex actions never feel artificial and the whole experience is genuinely immersive – if somewhat linear. Overall, this atmosphere-packed game is one of the best console-to-mobile ports we’ve played. Highly recommended.

I’m not into "quiet" games actually, but there’s no harm on trying this one.
