Proporta started life making carry cases for PDAs back in the pre-connected days so they know a few things about putting together a sturdy leather case for your handheld.

Their latest addition is the Aluminium Lined Leather Case specially made for the Nokia 5800. We thought we'd better check it out and see if it delivers as much protection as Proporta's other cases.

The  Proporta Aluminium Lined Leather Case is designed to fit the Nokia 5800 perfectly. The case has a fairly standard look, comprising of a leather outer shell with a flip-over lid. You slide your Nok into a plastic clip that holds it firmly in place. The leather shell wraps nicely around the 5800 but there gaps for the camera lens and headphones jack, so you won't need to take it out to use any of the phone's features.

So far, so standard, but the trick with this case is that it's alined with aluminium, which makes it far more rigid and better for protecting the Nokia's screen. The case looks more a business accessory than a style icon, comprising of a leather case with heavy stitching around the sides. For a slip case it adds some serious protection but adds to the bulk of the Nokia 5800.

On the downside, this isn't the most stylish of cases and is better suited to those people who see the 5800 as an essential work tool and not a fashion accessory. If sounds like you, there is even a belt clip you can attach to the back of the case, not something we'd ever use, but the option is there.

Sure, the Proporta Aluminium Lined Leather Case will add an extra level of protection to your Nokia 5800, especially if you're the type who likes to throw their smartphone in their bag rather than carry it in their pocket. However, it does add to the bulk of the device an we kind of wish that Proporta had developed something a little more stylish for such a mainstream phone as the Nokia 5800.
