Nokia Conversation review

Nokia doesn’t want to chat, life is too short just to chat – Nokia wants to have a Nokia Conversation with you. But don’t be dissuaded by the formality, this must-have messaging app adds iPhone-style threaded SMS streams to your S60 3rd edition handset.

The app is still finding its way out of Nokia’s ever-impressive Beta Labs so installation is slightly complex, involving installing and uninstalling various messaging components. Follow the instructions to the letter, though, and you’ll be up and running with 15 minutes.

Nokia Conversation is both a stand-alone application and a tab in your Contacts list. Navigate to the right from your Contacts and you’ll see a screen of all your texting buddies (with photos if you want), ranked by date received or name, though sadly not by volume. Conversations with unread text or MMS messages have envelope icons – simply click on a name to open the thread.

Each message gets one line, scrolling through the entire SMS then freezing. A second line shows time and date received, and an arrow icons tells you whether the message was incoming or outgoing. At the bottom is a two-line space for you to continue the chat. Sent messages show up immediately in the thread.

Nokia Conversation doesn’t replace the normal Messaging application, which is both a strength and a weakness. It’s great if you like both interfaces but adds a few clicks if want to navigate to the Conversation app just to read a new text.

That’s a tiny complaint, however, about a tight, reliable and fast application that shows Nokia at its best. Watch out Apple, suddenly your iPhone doesn’t look quite so special.
