Nokia has some pretty amazing smartphones lined up for release later this year and any one of them would make the perfect portable. Whether it's the flagship Nokia N97, the new Nokia E55 or Nokia E75 devices, or even the funkier 5730 XpressMusic or 5330 XpressMusic handsets announced earlier this month, there is a wealth of temptation to be had.

With that in mind, and taking the new Classic range in to account, we felt it was time to check out the contenders for the most wanted Nokia smartphone of 2009...

Nokia has announced some smashing looking devices in the last few months, each one hitting sweet-spots like no other company can manage. We can't own them all but we do want to play with them.

After all, it seems a long time since the launch of the Nokia 5800 back in January and now with over one million units sold, it seems to officially be the smartphone of choice. However, it's not the only smartphone Nokia is set to release this year, as we make it a grand total of XX devices waiting on the starters blocks.

The line-up for the most wanted Nokia yet to be released are:

Nokia N97

Nokia 5730 XpressMusic

Nokia E75

Nokia 7600 Classic

Nokia E55

Nokia 5330 XpressMusic

Nokia 6710 Navigator

Nokia 6720 Classic

This isn't a definitive list and doesn't take into account the range of concept phones out there we'd love to see put into circulation - just the ones that have been officially announced. Check out the list and let us know whether you think....

Wanted: Nokia N97

Launch Date: June 2009

Desire rating: Five Stars

It almost goes without saying that the most wanted Nok of the year is the Nokia N97. That mix of style, design quality and top-notch spec makes it the smartphone other companies will be taking lessons from. It's not so much the touchscreen or innovative slide-out QWERTY that makes it truly a desirable Nok, it's the fact that it looks so rock solid a device.

If you're still not convinced, check out the latest demo video, as it shows the N97 in action and exactly why it tops of list of most wanted Nokia smartphones for 2009.

Wanted: Nokia 5730 XpressMusic

Launch Date: TBC

Desire rating: Five Stars

For us, next comes the Nokia 5730 XpressMusic. Sure, it takes it design lead from the Nokia E75 but there is just something about this smartphone that makes it a device for leisure and business. The full QWERTY keyboard has that funky retro dot-matrix look but it's the inclusion of the Nokia wish-list of Comes With Music, N-Gage and even GPS all wrapped up with S60 goodness that makes it the device for the digital generation.

Wanted: Nokia E75

Launch Date: TBC but pre-sale already in-place

Desire Rating: Four Stars

Let's not dismiss the Nokia E75 so casually, as we think it's going to be the third most important eagerly desired Nok. It's the natural upgrade choice for those currently using the Nokia E71, as the larger keyboard and up-to-the-minute OS delivers. We think the funky side-loading design really adds to the appeal for those who need something quirky but business focussed.

Wanted: Nokia 6700 Classic

Launch Date: TBC

Desire Rating: Four Stars

Is this a smartphone? Sure, it's running S40 but this is something of a surprise handset, as it has all the trappings and feel of a standard S40 phone but comes with some of the most cutting-edge features you'll find in any candybar phone today. Check out the feature-set, which includes a 5-megapixel camera, A-GPS ans even full Nokia Maps support. If this isn't a smartphone then what is? What's more, the design looks fantastic,  making it the perfect choice for those who don't need a full QWERTY device but wants the power and functionality of a top-notch Nok.

Wanted: Nokia 6710 Navigator

Launch Date: TBC

Desire Rating: Four Stars

Nokia is never afraid to try new things and it's this level of innovation that others simply lack the courage of initiative to follow. Take the 6710 Navigator for instance, this is a phone aimed solely at those who put GPS and navigation high on their list of 'must-haves'. Sure, it's got GPS built-in but it also has a dedicated navigation button so you can instantly get location and tracking services. It can be used in leisure mode too with killer app Sports Tracker, making this the best navigation handset around.

What about the amazing N86! surely better than these phones.
Some may argue this compared to the N97. But its personal preferance and the size of the N97 takes it out of the phone market for me and into the mini laptop market. Not really going to be used as every persons day to day phone, & I think it’ll go the way of the N810.

For the first time in my life I’m thinking of dumping Nokia, I currently have an N82 which was fine for this last year, but I was really lookwing forward to the N97, and the more I read the less I want it. Its total plastic for one (Nokia need to use some metal or better materials for high end phones), the processor is a bit wimpy (slightly better than the 5800, but remember N97 is almost double price). I know I’ll probably end up buying it as I’m such a big fan of S60, but I think its not really as impressive as people say, and no doubt Apple will a new phone at the time of the N97s launch. But compared to the N97 the other Nokias are awful this year, the N86 still uses the ancient QVGA resolution too.
