When Nokia announced the arrival of Nokia Messaging 1.1 last week, it also took the time to mention that a version for S60 5th Edition devices, such as the Nokia 5800, would be arriving in May.
Well it seems the software is already out there and in good working order. Join us after the jump as we take a look at Nokia Messaging for Nokia 5800...
Nokia Messaging will soon be at the heart of the Nokia 5800, the Nokia N97 and other future S60 5th Edition devices. The difference between this version of the most popular email client for Nokia phones is that it offers touchscreen support.
Nokia Messaging for S60 5th Edition smartphones will ship in May and it currently in the Alpha phase of testing. The guys over at Symbian Guru have been lucky enough to get involved in the project and have posted a smashing report that gets right to the heart of the app.
The app works in the same way as the version for S60 3rd Edition devices but has been reformatted to take advantage of the touchscreen display, so there are three large buttons along the of the screen, for Reply/Forward, Delete and Compose. It seems that if you choose Reply/Forward a sub-menu will appear allowing you to choose your action, which keeps the main screen free from clutter.
There is the standard scroll bar for rolling through your emails but it seems you can also simply grab at the inbox and pull yourself through it, which proves a lot quicker in most cases.
Composing emails works well and even adding attachments seems to be a joy with no limitations on type so far. However, according to the Guru, actually reading your email isn't as easy as the three large buttons tend to get in the way, limiting the amount of onscreen viewing.
We're happy with the way Nokia Messaging seems to be going. As we mentioned a few days ago, we're really looking forward to getting our hands on Nokia Messaging for the 5800, as it's the one area we're not been lucky with. Roll on May when we can get our hands on this latest version.
