Nokia is constantly working on new designs, we all know that, but one of the stranger form factors to emerge is that of the 'swizel' phone. Think Sidekick and you won't go too far wrong.

According to documents leaked by a tipster, Nokia is working on the innovative design for US carrier Verizon. Get the full scoop on the new design after the jump...

Nokia is no stranger to innovation, just look at the QWERTY keyboard on the Nokia E75 or the even more stylish take of that on the Nokia N97 and you'll see what we mean. However, documents leaked to gadget site Boy Genius Report suggest that Nokia is working on something that looks like the Sidekick.

This device is still in early development stages, so hasn't even got a codename for itself, let along an official launch date. However, according to gadget site ElectricPig, this device is intended for the 'youth' market, making it essentially a texting and social media device.

What's more, there are no firm details on what the device will actually look like. However, the image to the right is the Boy Genius Report take on what they think the device will look like. However, it seems this won't be a full-blown S60 device, as the report also expects it to be a S40 device.

As we've seen from the Nokia 6700 Classic, you can cram a whole lot of tech into even something as simple as a S40 device these days. The design seems to feature a square form factor that swivels open at one corner to reveal a QWERTY keypad.

We don't expect any hard facts on this device to emerge for some time but it could well be one of the devices that gets a mention at this year's Nokia World 2009, which will be held in Stuttgart this September.

This \"innovation\" is destined to be only a historical novelty. The iPhone shattered the paradigm on user interfaces. In fact the popularity of the iPhone, while its a poor quality as a communication device or camera, its fame has increased because of its capacitive touchscreen and massive amounts of applications. Applications are what Nokia needs.

Nokia needs to take notice when iPhone owners are quick to praise their phone for apps such as an image of a cigarette lighter and yet, forgive its radio shortcomings filled with dropped calls, no stereo bluetooth, etc. Without argument Nokia presently has the better radio hardware. It needs to now migrate all future smartphones to elegant touchscreens.
